Frequently asked questions
What are the immediate steps if I suspect a concussion during judo?
If in doubt, sit them out! Immediately remove the individual from training or competition to prevent further injury.
How do you modify judo training to minimise concussion risk?
We emphasise safe training practices, ensuring partners work well together, follow instruction, and maintain control. We focus on proper ukemi (breakfall) techniques for those being thrown.
How do you educate about concussion signs, symptoms, and risks?
We consistently discuss the importance of safety, respect, and control. Recognising concussion signs is crucial for coaches, players, and parents. All concussions are serious and involve a brain injury or trauma.
What are the main areas affected by a concussion?
There are four main areas: Physical (headaches, dizziness), Mental Processing (not thinking clearly), Mood (changes) and Sleep.
What is the return-to-training protocol after a concussion?
There should be no return to competition for at least 21 days after a concussion. Most symptoms reduce or disappear by 14 days after the injury. Prioritise return to work or education before sport.
Is there a specific process for returning to activity and competition?
Yes, there is a six-stage protocol and checklist for managing a player back to activity and competition. Refer to the Scottish Sports Concussion Guidance for detailed information.
Is Judo inherently dangerous?
Judo is inherently safe but sometimes heads clash or there is a bad landing. It is important that training partners work well together, they follow instruction and keep control. For the person being thrown know and use good ukemi (breakfall) waza.
How long does it typically take to recover from a concussion?
Most people with a concussion recover fully with time.
